OBJECTIVES


BRIEF HISTORY OF SAIDIA INITIATIVE SELF HELP GROUP PROJECT:
Established in 1995 as a community self help group project by 12 volunteers to mobilize the poor urban slum dwellers into initiating activities that are geared towards solving their many poverty-related problems. The rampant poverty and the devastating effects of HIV-Aids scourge saw the slum dwellers lives deteriorating from worse to worst. It was evident at the already impoverished population had awaken to a rude shock where as if problems of poverty were not already too much it was now evident that he impact of Aids related deaths had left most families more destitute. This desperate scenario where children were orphaned while still very young resulted to high school dropouts and unprecedented poverty. With no external assistance nor any from the government, some volunteers within the community with diverse skills and backgrounds came together to mobilize the community to learn to solve their own problems by pulling any available community resources and by extension solicit for external assistance to help them solve their many ills that afflict them.

Objectives of the project:

i) To initiate integrated community-based development programs focusing on the most vulnerable individuals and groups within their immediate cultural, social, religious and physical environment through inter sectoral and multi-disciplinary approaches.

ii) To solicit for and provide child sponsorship programs that would provide the necessary basic needs for poor families and the many orphans.

iii) To encourage and promote sustainable environmental programs through water & sanitation and shelter programs through integrated effort in the most effective manner.

iv) To encourage and establish educational programs and awareness campaigns for HIV-Aids prevention and control.

v) To establish a skills_training and (counseling center for casework,family therapy and group counseling) that would assist the any school drop outs who are beyond school going age to learn various skills for future self-reliance.

vi) To promote and encourage charitable endeavor by way of voluntary work or other lawful charitable activity by mobilizing both local and external resources towards community development and poverty alleviation of the target communities.

vii) To establish recreational and counseling programs as well as provide spiritual and counseling guidance through rehabilitation and vocational activities.

viii) To establish an endowment fund to receive grants, donations, gifts and other assistance in any form whatsoever from any source, foundation, individuals organizations etc for the furtherance of the organization?s objectives and operations.

IX) To solicit for and promote emergency and relief activities for those affected by drought, floods, HIV-Aids scourge and any form of displacement and affliction.

x) To initiate and promote income-generating activities that would alleviate poverty and enhance self-reliance for the many impoverished families. This would be in form of community merry-go-schemes and / or revolving loan schemes or any other productive schemes.
